Activity 1: Matching Shapes during Read-Aloud
Materials: Skippyjon Jones Shape Up book (you can find it here), print out of shapes (see right), glue *Use your own discretion on which sheet you think will most benefit your child's learning. One has a larger amount of shapes that may be too difficult for some of our learners Before reading, print out two copies of the shape sheet. Keep in mind there are more shapes on the print out than in the book. It is up to you if you want to use all the shapes or just the ones in the book. You can print this out in black and white, color, or one of each. Take one of the sheets and cut out all of the shapes prior to reading. This is what you will use to match on the sheet that is not cut up. 1. Using your Skippyjon Jones Shape Up book let your child know you will be reading a book about shapes just like what they are learning at school. Although this will be educational, reading with your child should be fun and enjoyable first. Both you and your child should be in a good mood and eager to learn! 2. While you are reading the story, make sure your child has a clear view of the pictures and what shape is being shown. You can reinforce this shape by telling them “See he’s on the circle” even after you have read the text provided. It is important that your child is exposed to the picture and names of shapes as much as possible to help their memory. 3. Once you are done reading the book, tell your child you are going to do an art project! Pick one shape, hand them the cut out and say, “this is the circle, can you find the circle on the page?” and assist them in matching the shape to the print out. Your child may have difficulty with this and may need some verbal or physical prompting. As you are matching shapes, make references to the story and what Skippyjon Jones did with that shape. This will help reinforce their memories and the concepts they have about shapes as well as the prepositional descriptions of shapes in space. This activity relates to the MA Frameworks Cluster PK.G.A.1 and PK.G.A.2 from our Math in the Classroom page. |

Activity 2: Drawing Shapes
Materials: Skippyjon Jones book, worksheets, pencil/pen/markers Before reading print out one of the worksheets (see left) and the print out of Skippyjon Jones (see left). There are several worksheets with different degrees of difficulty. Use your discretion to pick which one your child will benefit from the most. Also select a writing utensil that your child is able to hold independently or with minimal assistance when adapted. 1. Similar to activity 1, engage your child as much as possible while reading the story. Point out what the shape is, what Skippyjon Jones is doing, etc. Get them interested in the story and the mathematical content as much as possible. 2. After reading tell your child you are going to draw your own shapes that Skippyjon Jones can play on! Using the print out with traceable shapes, help your child trace the shapes or let them do it independently. After the shapes are traced, you can help your child glue Skippyjon Jones onto the shapes, next to the shapes, or wherever they want him to be! 3. After Skippyjon is placed onto the paper, write a phrase underneath the shape describing where Skippyjon Jones is in relation to the shape. Try to engage your child in helping you with this, if they are unable to think of the words it is okay to create the phrase for them. We want the students to be exposed to this language even if they do not 100% understand it. This activity will reinforce MA Math Frameworks Cluster PK.G.A.2 and PK.G.B.3 from our Math in the Classroom page. *All images were found on Google Image Search Engine |
